Healthy behaviors influence happiness and develop social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies for elementary school-age children.
Having an open discussion with students on how to manage emotions, reduce stress and fear, be a good friend, hurtful words, increase empathy and kindness and ask for help when they are struggling and sad. In addition, if there is a particular issue or concern that your school has experienced, that needs to be part of our presentation, we can tailor it to your individual needs.
Promoting a child’s mental health helps them relate well with others, provides a sense of security, and fosters their growth both at home and in school. In addition, awareness and early intervention have been shown to help prevent or delay the consequences of mental illness (NAMI, 2016).
The LRJ Foundation recognizes the importance of mental health education and awareness in children.
- Our programs for this distinctive age group aim to build a child’s confidence and competence, which is the foundation of strong self-esteem promoting help-seeking behaviors.
- Aspects of our youth programs include small groups to increase individualized attention, tangible and age-appropriate activities, exercises used to help children identify a spectrum of emotions and increase self-esteem, character, and courage to ask for help when they need it.
- Encouraging practicing healthy coping skills that can last a lifetime of good mental health.
The 35 – 40 minute LIVE interactive presentation is best held in a smaller group setting, with less than 100 students per session and a small group classroom is preferred. The students that have been a part of our presentations enter singing and smiling as our intro music is playing, they are attentive and engaged throughout, and leave with giving hugs to the presenters as they open up about their feelings and leave with some pretty fun giveaways!!

- Phase 1: Emotions, the purpose of this presentation is to help students understand how emotions can impact their day. This presentation provides students with a primary understanding of emotions by building their emotional vocabulary and describing how emotions not only impact our thoughts and behavior, but also dictate the results or outcome of our day. In helping students understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behavior within themselves, they can begin to see how the responsibility of caring for their mental health and wellness lies a great deal within their sphere of control.
- Phase II: Thoughts, the purpose of this presentation is to provide students with a simple understanding of how our thoughts can impact not only our emotions, but also our behavior. Students will be introduced to a definition of thoughts, given examples, and learn the difference between helpful and unhelpful thoughts. In this presentation, thoughts are not categorized by “good” and “bad” as the former are subjective terms. Thoughts, in this presentation are categorized by objective outcomes that can be easily determined by the end result (ie the behavior or emotion that follows the thought). Experiential techniques that can be done in class are also provided so that students can continue to build their understanding and identify their own thoughts.
- Phase III: Behavior, the purpose of this presentation is to inform students on how their behavior can impact their day. In this presentation, students will become acclimated with how their behaviors can impact others, lead to tangible and intangible rewards, thereby producing feelings of confidence and pride within themselves. Students will also been given scenarios to encourage active participation during the presentation.
- Part IV: Assertiveness, Putting it All Together. In this presentation, the connections that students have made regarding the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behavior will be evident to teach an extremely important skill—assertiveness. In this presentation, students will learn not only about assertiveness, but also how to use proper assertiveness to speak up for themselves and others. This presentation will also promote a beginner’s level to being able to empathize and understand other students’ behavior. Format is activity based.
